Mira found herself standing small and hunched, as if there was a great weight in the air, bearing down on her. The sun might be shining, but here it shed no warmth. She glanced at Zerrick and saw he squinted his eyes, one hand raised as if to protect himself from the glare. It wasn’t that bright, she mused. He had that look on his face again, the one he had worn when he used Nanna’s crystals for the first time. That did not bode well.

“Zerrick, leave it alone and let’s hurry past this place. I’m getting a bad feeling about this. It almost seems as if somebody is watching us.” She tried to explain the impression she was getting, of a great eye centered above them, surveying the area.

She pulled at his arm, but Zerrick was beyond her pleas. He swayed, fingering the pouch at his neck as if it itched.

“Who in the world do you think built this? And for what purpose?” he murmured dreamily, not looking at her at all, completely engrossed with the pedestal and basin.

“Who knows? Who cares?” Mira said in a hushed tone, glancing around nervously. As far as she could see they were alone, but never had she felt more surrounded, and the worst watcher seemed right at her shoulder. Watching, waiting, not focused on the two of them yet, but merely guarding the entire area. She wanted to move through as quickly as possible, and not draw that attention to themselves.

Leave it to Zerrick to have other plans.

“Zerrick, now is not the time to have one of your spells overtake you. There’s something evil here, I can feel it. Leave it alone!” she said in a fierce whisper, circling round to block his way. What she saw in his face told her the effort was useless. His eyes were glazed and he was oblivious to her presence.

“Zerrick, come back to me! Zerrick!” She grabbed his chin and turned his face so that he was looking at her.

“Huh?” he said in a half daze, blinking slowly. “Mira, what’s the matter?”

“This whole place is the matter. Wake up for a moment and look what it’s doing to you. And there’s something else. Something evil. Let’s come away, Zerrick,” she said, looking straight into his eyes which were half closed, almost drugged-looking.

He gently removed her hands. “S’all right,” he said in a slur, patting her hand, “She says s’all right.” He turned back to the dais and stepped around her, his eyes again losing focus, seeing a world beyond hers.
